Stranded in Paris

When things go wrong and you get stranded in Paris ORLY - Travel for a Living

Spending an extra night in Paris? Sounds marvellous. Who wouldn’t be up for that? Spoiler alert – I wasn’t. When I tell you that the only time I actually saw the Eiffel Tower during my recent trip to Paris was when I finally took off from the airport, you might get an idea of why being stranded in Paris and spending an extra night there wasn’t too high on my agenda. You guessed it. We are not talking an extra night in the heart of Paris, we are talking being stranded in Paris Orly… the airport. Which clearly wasn’t my idea of a fun Friday night?

But I might be getting a little ahead of myself here. So let me start at the beginning…

My Week in Slovenia

A week in Slovenia - Travel for a Living

Have you ever been to Slovenia? Is it on your bucket list of places to visit? No? Well it actually should be. But you know what? It wasn’t on my bucket list either. Which is a shame, because Slovenia actually has a lot to offer. So let me tell you why you should add a week in Slovenia to your bucket list.

As part of my work, I visited Slovenia last week. This was actually my second trip to Slovenia, I had already been to Ljubljana for one night back in October. But this time it was for the entire week and it would take me beyond the capital.

What to expect when flying LOT Polish Airlines

My recent trip to Slovenia saw me fly LOT Polish Airlines for the very first time.

In my mind, this was just another budget airline and I feared the worst. Especially since I was pushing my luck with my hand luggage allowance.

But gosh was I wrong. LOT Polish Airlines actually turned out to be a decent and modern airline. So to save you from the same misperception, let me tell you what to expect when flying LOT Polish Airlines.

The Old City of Jerusalem in just 2 Hours

Exploring the Old City of Jerusalem - Travel for a Living

It goes without saying that two hours is nowhere near enough to explore the Old City of Jerusalem. You can barely scratch the surface of this wonderful place. But if two hours is all you’ve got, you’d better make the most of it. So come with me on a photographic tour of Old Jerusalem in two hours.

During our third and final work trip to Israel last October Jerusalem was finally on the agenda. We’d been looking forward to a visit to Jerusalem from the start. But at the same time, we obviously feared that we’d go for our meetings and not actually get to see anything of Jerusalem. After all, we were here for work first and foremost.

Day Trip to Philadelphia from New York

The best of Philly in just 1 day - Travel for a Living

Visiting Philadelphia had been on our radar for a while. Before we decided on a road trip through New England two years ago, the original plan was to visit New York, Philadelphia and Washington. But the road trip eventually won the game. So during our last trip to New York City we decided to venture out a little and finally take a day trip to Philadelphia from New York. After all, it is only 1.5 hours on the train. Easy peasy.

There is a direct Amtrak train from Penn Station to Philadelphia 30th Street Station. To get the best price, we booked our train tickets to Philadelphia a few weeks in advance and committed to fixed trains rather than flexible tickets. Which meant we only paid $156 return for the two of us. Out of curiosity we checked the ticket prices the morning of our trip and it would have cost us a whopping $330 if we’d bought the tickets on the day. That is double the price for the exact same trains! So good thing we were prepared (for once).

Walking the High Line Park in New York

Walking the High Line in New York - Travel for a Living

When you think of New York City as a concrete jungle, you are only partly right. Yes, New York is home to some of the biggest and best skyscrapers and it is built on a fairly tight grid. But it is also full of greenery.

The best known is probably Central Park, which is a world in itself. So if you are heading to New York, make sure you don’t miss it. And to get you going, check my 10 recommendations of what to do in Central Park (and the one to give a miss).

But Central Park isn’t the only green on offer. Far from it.

Head to the West and you will find the ‘High Line Park’, an elevated linear park that spans from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District all the way up to the 30th Street.

Where to find bargains and the best shopping places in New York - Travel for a Living

For me a big part of any New York City trip is shopping. I love to shop. Preparing for a Trip to San Francisco

Hope you all started the New Year well? We sure did.

As we said good-bye to 2018, it was time to start thinking about our upcoming travel plans for 2019.

Thanks to different annual leave schedules (one by tax year, one by calendar year), every year Mr T and I end up with a week’s worth of annual leave that needs to be taken in the first three months of the year. So what to do and where to go? Last year we went to New York end of January, the year before it was a week in Normandy in February.

2018 – My Year in Numbers

As 2018 is in its final hours, it is time to take stock and review these past twelve months.

I’ve added up all my flights and trips and nights away and 2018 has been a very busy year. It didn’t just feel like this, the numbers do actually confirm that.

And I have added plenty of new countries to my travel map. Back in April I asked myself whether I would be able to visit 40 countries before turning 40. But the count only came up to 21 at the time. Meanwhile I have added another 5 countries (Poland, Hungary, Israel, Slovenia and Serbia), so a 50 before 50 goal looks a little more doable.

Evening Walk through Belgrade

I made it. The last trip of the year is over. Well, when I say last travel, I mean last work related travel. By the time this post goes live, I have done one more trip, this time back home for Christmas.

This last travel now saw me venture out to yet another new country, this time Serbia. Which is new country number 5 for this year (well on track for that 50 before 50 challenge since I so miserably failed the 40 before 40).

I was really excited about going to Belgrade, as I’ve never been, but then I got a terrible cold the day before and all I really wanted was to stay in bed.
